Day by Day
Day 1-2
Gathering at the hotel in Xiamen in the southeast. This is one of Chinas most expansive and modern regions. It is a city of distinguished heritage with a big Buddhist temple.
Day 3-5
By bus up in the mountains northwest of Xiamen. The area is known for its special architectural style, the houses are called Tulou. The huge round, oval or square houses are built as fortifications, with only a few windows outwards and only one doorway. Every house is inhabited by several families, sometimes an entire village. Today no Tulous are built, but the ones that still exist are still inhabited. For two nights you stay in these houses and get to participate in the farmer's everyday life. Make day excursions in the green terrain landscape! Last night back to Xiamen.
Day 6-8
Flight to Guilin, and then to Yangzhou by the Li River. In this Chinese famous landscape monolithic mountains rise everywhere. You can rent a bicycle or take a boat ride.
Day 9
Bus to Chengyang. The area is dominated by the Dong people, who are famous for their beautiful covered wooden bridges, "Wind and Rain Bridges".
Day 10
By bus to the little city*. in the southeastern Guizhou province. This place will be your base during the trekking. Everyday there is a market in one of the nearby villages. People gather to do commerce or just gossip.
Day 11-15
During five days you trek in a green, hilly and very beautiful landscape. Magnificent rice terraces layered with stone pine and gorges. The villages lie close and are bound together by wide paths. The Miao are the biggest ethnic group in this area. It is up to you to decide for how long your want to trek. The program during the trek is flexible. You trek in groups of 3-4 together with a local interpreter. You decide the pace and distance on each days stage. You stay overnight in villages along the way, and get a good insight into life under completely different conditions than in the city. No other tourists come here, that is guaranteed.
Day 16-17
Bus to the Kaili, capital in the local prefectures for the ethnic minorities. Also home to our tour leader. Take it easy for a day or visit a market.
Day 18
Train south to Guangzhou. You travel in hard-sleeper, equivalent to Swedish couchette/sleeper.
Day 19-21
Two days in South Chinas metropolis, Guangzhou, previously known as Canton. On Shamian Island in the Pearl River, there are traces of the city's colonial history.
Day 22
The journey is finished.
