Day by Day
Day 1
Gathering at the hotel in
Arusha. The airports name is Kilimanjaro.
Day 2
You can see the snow coated peak of Kilimanjaro from the airport, even if the closer Mt Meru seems
more impressive. Our jeeps depart to Lake Mayara National Park in the afternoon. Beautiful, with
lots of birds, giraffes, elephants and with a little luck, tree climbing lions.
Day 3
You continue to the
Ngoron-goro crater, with the largest concentration of animals in
Tanzania. You will see much of the familiar Eastern African fauna e.g. gnus, zebras, buffalo,
several kind of antelopes, elephants and lion. The wild life is rich all year around, since the
access to water is good in the crater lake.
Day 4
After breakfast back to
Arusha.
Day 5-8
By bus to
Longido, centre for the Masai in both Tanzania and Kenya. You trek with the Masai
for four days around Mt Longido, 2700 m high. Food, tents and your personal luggage will be carried
by donkeys. You camp outside the Masai's
bomas. While you trek you will meet Masai
with their herds of cattle along the way, as well as a lot of wild animals, such as antelopes,
zebras, giraffes and perhaps buffalo. Last night to
Moshi close to Kilimanjaro.
Day 9
You return to
Arusha, this time to prepare for the climbing of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Day 10-15
Bus to the park entrance at 1900m height on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. You follow the
Machame path to the top and have six days to reach the top. The generous time reserved facilitates
the adaptation to height, so that as many as possible will reach the top. The climb starts in the
cloud forest. You reach subalpine fields with giant lobelias. At last you reach Uhuru Peak at
5895m, the highest spot in Africa. You rest at a hotel in
Moshi. To climb Kilimanjaro is
very physically challenging, so good condition is necessary. Minimum age is 10 years. Most people
reach the top! You sleep in tents.
Day 16
Scheduled local bus to
Dar es Salaam, where you have one day to explore the countries
biggest town with about 3 million inhabitants.
Day 17-18
Furter north with bus to Bagamoyo, one of the most interesting places along the coast, where you
stay by the beach. The caravans to The African interior departed from here as did the exploring of
the continent. Burton, Livingstone and Stanley all begun their journeys here. Later it became
trading port for ivory, slaves and capital of German East Africa. Late at night you go to the
beach, to a
dhow. When the high tide arrives with the night breeze, you sail to
Zanzibar under the stars.
Day 19-20
Arrival at Unguja (
Zanzibar) and
Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar City) in the
midmorning. It might be the most interesting historical town, with its winding alleys, in Africa.
Day 21-22
Two days are spent on the north side of the island, you will have time to reflect, bathe and
snorkel over beautiful coral reefs. Relax and enjoy Zanzibar.
Day 23
Very fast hydrofoil back to the mainland and
Dar es Salaam
where the journey is finished. Flight home not earlier than 17.00
