Day by Day
Day 1
Gathering at the hotel in
Arusha.
Day 2
One day in Arusha. After the mornings quick course in Swahili you explore the town.
Day 3-4
By mini bus, first to Manyara National Park, which you see during the day. The same evening to
Tarangire National Park, where you spend the night near the park. Tarangire is one of the
parks that has the largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania. You can see a lot of the East
African fauna here, giraffe's zebras, buffalo, several kinds of antelopes, elephants and lions. Bus
to
Same, where you stay the night.
OBS; On the tour in
February we chose, instead of Tarangire to go to
the
Ngorongoro Crater. Animal life is rich here all the
year as the afflux of water to the maar is good.
Day 5-11
Along a winding mountain road to the village Chome in the morning. Simple accommodation, two by
two, with families in this rather prosperous village, where most of the inhabitants live of growing
vegetables, grain, bananas and cassava. Chome lies at 1900 m height in a fertile valley. The
evenings get a little chilly. With interpreters you trek a few days in mountain rainforest in
Chome. You stay in tents. The program is flexible and you split up in smaller groups and do longer
or shorter treks. The highest peak in the area is Shengenaa Peak, at 2460 m height. On a clear day
you can see Kilimanjaro's snow covered peak from here, After the trek you return to the family. If
you don't want to trek, you are welcome to stay in Chome and participate in the everyday chores,
visit the school, the clinic and the church. Bus back to
Same in the afternoon.
Day 12-13
A long bus journey to
Dar es Salaam the countries biggest town, about 1,5 million
inhabitants and a lively seaport. You discover the city in smaller groups. Visit the markets.
Tinga-tinga-paintings and
Makonde art and other souvenirs can be
found and bought. A visit to the Swedish Embasssy you will pay together.
Day 14-15
You go furter north to
Bagamoyo by the Indian Ocean. Bagamoyo was capital in previous German
East Africa and an important harbor for slaves and ivory. Today it is a tourist resort with
beautiful beaches. You visit a theatre and art school. You might get to go on a fishing trip with
one of the local fishers, if you ask. Snorkeling and bathing are other options. When the high tide
arrives with the night breeze, you sail with a dhow to
Zanzibar. A dhow is a traditional
boat with latin-rigs, barley changed since the 16
th century. The boat is open and you
sleep under the stars.
Day 16-20
You sail into Zanzibar's harbor in the morning. Here in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar City),
you have time to stroll around on your own. The winding, whitewashed alleys with their Arabic
architecture is an easy place to get lost in. But getting lost is fun! To take a boat to a coral
reef or visit the island giant turtles are other options. Enjoy delicious food form various
cultures. Common spices are cinnamon and cardamom. A spice safari is recommended. Zanzibar is
concluded with a couple of days on the northern coast with bathing and snorkeling over the coral
reef.
Day 21
Very fast hydrofoil back to to
Dar es Salaam where the
journey is finished. Flight home not earlier than 17.00
