Day by Day
Day 1
Gathering at the hotel in Accra.
Day 2
One day in Ghana's capital. A roundtrip takes you to Jamestown and Independence Square, some of the places that remind you of Ghana's history. You also get to visit the peculiar manufacturing of coffins in Teshi-Nungua. The coffins can have the shape of cocoa beans, a fish or a car, all depending on the deceased occupation or wishes. Communication is no problem, most Ghanaians speak English.
Day 3-4
Bus to Akosombo by Lake Volta and from there by ferry north on the huge dam. You reach Yeji the next day.
Day 5
Over the river and on to Tamale.
Day 6-8
The journey continues by bus to the village Achunbunyo, where you are received by the village chief and his council. They have chosen your host families. You stay under very simple conditions, participate in the chores you can manage and eat with your host family. This is a unique opportunity to experience Ghanaian culture and to get an insight in their everyday life. The elder schoolchildren act as interpreters. In the evening on to Mole National Park.
Day 9-10
In Mole national park you walk with a guide out to the thickly grown African savannah. You see antelopes, baboons, wild pigs, hornbills and groups of elephants everywhere. There is a waterhole by the hotel, to which the animals come at sun dawn.
Day 11-14
Bus to Kumasi, previously capital in the Ashanti Kingdom, which gave the British a tough resistance. Time to visit museums, the fort and markets or to make a trip to the kente weavers in Bonwire and Butterfly sanctuary.
Day 15
To Tarkwa in the mining district, by bus. You visit a gold mine and meet galamsay, gold finders that work without any technological resources. Today gold is Ghana's main product of export.
Day 15-17
On to Butre, a small fishing village by the coast. During a few days you enjoy a friendly atmosphere and nice beaches. Possibilities to make journeys to e.g. Mzulezu, a picturesque village built on poles in the sea. Trekking along the coast or a canoe ride up the river are other possibilities.
Day 18-19
To Cape Coast and Elmina. Visit the forts and go to the dreaded dungeons where the slaves were held. A very moving experience.
Day 20-21
You stay at Hans Cottage with a crocodile farm as your neighbor. Kakum National Park lies close by. You can do two treks, one in the evening and one early in the morning with a guide in a well preserved part of the African rain forest. Another experience is to walk on the system of suspension bridges in the tree crowns- 350 m long and 28 m above the ground. Not as scary as it seams.You can also choose to visit a cocoa plantation and a palm oil factory.
Day 22-23
Bus back to Accra and another day to look around in the capital. The journey is finished.
